Cummins QSM11 Marine Engine Application
The Cummins QSM11 is an inline six-cylinder, four-stroke marine diesel engine family with approximately 10.8 litres displacement.

What Does the 5260393 Sea Water Pump Do?
A marine diesel engine produces considerable heat when it is working.
In a heat-exchanger cooling arrangement, the engine's coolant circulates through a closed circuit while seawater moves through a separate raw-water circuit.
The 5260393 sea water pump provides the pumping action required to maintain seawater circulation through the applicable raw-water side of the system.
This circulation becomes particularly important as engine load increases.
An engine operating at idle alongside the quay is producing less heat than the same engine driving a vessel under substantial load. A cooling system that appears satisfactory at low load can therefore begin showing problems when the engine is working harder.
If a QSM11 operates normally at low load but starts running hotter as load increases, the sea water pump is one item to inspect—but it should not automatically be assumed to be the cause.
The seawater intake, sea strainer, suction hoses, pump, heat exchanger and other parts of the raw-water circuit may all need to be considered.

5260393 Is the Complete Sea Water Pump
An important distinction needs to be made when ordering this part.
5260393 identifies the complete sea water pump, not simply the flexible impeller inside the pump.
The impeller is an internal service part and should be identified separately when only an impeller replacement is required.
For example, an engineer may open the pump during scheduled maintenance and find that the flexible impeller is worn while the rest of the pump remains serviceable.
In that situation, replacing the correct impeller or other required service parts may be sufficient.
The situation is different if inspection finds shaft play, leakage, bearing deterioration, housing damage or more extensive internal wear.
Installing a new impeller alone would not correct those problems.
The condition of the existing pump should therefore determine whether the requirement is for an impeller, service parts or the complete 5260393 sea water pump.
When Should the QSM11 Sea Water Pump Be Checked?
A change in cooling-system performance is a good reason to inspect the raw-water circuit.
Possible signs that deserve investigation include:
None of these symptoms automatically proves that the complete 5260393 pump has failed.
Imagine a QSM11 that maintains its normal operating temperature alongside the berth but begins running hotter after the vessel gets underway.
The pump may require attention, but the problem could also be elsewhere in the seawater circuit.
A partially restricted sea strainer may still allow sufficient flow at lower engine load. A deteriorated suction hose can restrict flow. The seawater intake may be obstructed, or cooling passages may have reduced flow.
For this reason, it is better to inspect the raw-water cooling system systematically before replacing the pump.
Check the Flexible Impeller
The flexible impeller inside a marine sea water pump works in demanding conditions.
As the pump rotates, the impeller blades repeatedly flex while creating the pumping action that moves seawater through the housing.
Over time, the impeller can wear, crack, harden or lose sections of its blades. Operating the pump without an adequate water supply can also damage the impeller.
If an old impeller is removed and one or more blade sections are missing, simply installing another impeller may not complete the repair.
The missing material may have travelled farther through the raw-water circuit.
Where practical, the downstream cooling circuit should therefore be checked for fragments that could restrict water flow.
Don't Replace the Pump Before Checking the Cooling System
The sea water pump is only one part of the raw-water cooling circuit.
When seawater flow appears reduced, the investigation may also need to include the seawater intake, sea strainer, suction hoses and connections, flexible impeller, pump condition, heat exchanger and other relevant parts of the cooling circuit.
A restriction elsewhere can make a serviceable pump appear to be the problem.
The opposite can also happen.
A clean strainer and heat exchanger cannot compensate for a pump that is no longer providing adequate raw-water circulation.
Following the cooling circuit logically helps determine whether the problem is actually the pump or something elsewhere in the system.
Complete Pump or Service Parts?
Not every pump problem requires replacement of the complete assembly.
If inspection shows that the pump remains serviceable and the problem is limited to routine impeller wear, replacing the correctly identified service part may be sufficient.
If there is significant shaft play, leakage, bearing deterioration, housing damage or more extensive internal wear, the complete pump may require repair or replacement.
This distinction matters when ordering.
A customer requiring an impeller should receive the correct impeller.
A customer requiring the complete 5260393 sea water pump should not receive only an impeller kit.
